Unemployment filings surge to 542,000 and number of Americans continuing on benefits nears 26-year high.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment insurance surged to the highest levels in 16 years, and the number of people continuing to collect benefits neared a 26-year high, the government said Thursday.
